When to visit Kashmir — a month-by-month weather guide

Snow in Gulmarg, tulips in Srinagar, almond blossoms in Pahalgam. We map the year so you don't pick the wrong week.

Kashmir doesn't have a "best time to visit" — it has six different best times, each for a different traveller. Here's our month-by-month guide based on 200+ Kashmir trips planned over the last decade.

January — February: Snow Wonderland

Temperature: -5°C to 5°C in Srinagar. -10°C to 0°C in Gulmarg.

Best for: Snow lovers, skiers, photographers, honeymooners seeking cosy houseboat experiences.

This is when Gulmarg becomes one of the best skiing destinations in Asia. Apharwat Peak gets 6+ feet of snow. The gondola becomes essential. Dal Lake partially freezes — surreal to see. Houseboats stay heated with traditional bukharis (wood stoves).

Heads up: some roads to Pahalgam may close due to heavy snow. Sonamarg is generally inaccessible. Flights to Srinagar occasionally get diverted to Jammu due to weather.

March — April: Almond Blossoms & Tulips

Temperature: 5°C to 18°C.

Best for: Photographers, romantics, anyone who wants to see Kashmir at its most photogenic.

The famous Tulip Garden in Srinagar opens for just 3-4 weeks (typically late March to mid-April). It's the largest tulip garden in Asia — 1.5 million tulips. Almond and cherry blossoms cover Badamwari Garden. Snow still on the high passes. Light woollens enough.

This is our personal favourite month. The valley wakes up after winter, everything is fresh, crowds are still light, and prices are reasonable.

May — June: Family Travel Season

Temperature: 12°C to 28°C.

Best for: Families with kids, first-timers, summer travellers escaping the plains heat.

This is peak tourist season. All destinations are open and accessible. Gulmarg meadows are green and full of wildflowers. Pahalgam is at its prettiest. Sonamarg's Thajiwas glacier is reachable. Pony rides everywhere.

Heads up: book hotels 6-8 weeks in advance. Prices are at their highest. Crowds at major sights.

July — August: Yatra & Monsoon

Temperature: 18°C to 30°C.

Best for: Amarnath Yatra pilgrims, budget travellers.

Light monsoon shows up but Kashmir is in the rain shadow of the Pir Panjal, so rains are gentler than Himachal or Uttarakhand. Amarnath Yatra is in full swing. Pahalgam roads are crowded with pilgrims.

Off-season for tourism — prices drop 20-30%. Good for budget travel if you don't mind occasional rain.

September — October: Autumn Magic

Temperature: 8°C to 22°C.

Best for: Photographers, couples, anyone who loves autumn colours.

The chinar trees turn deep red and orange. The light becomes golden. Apple harvest is in full swing — orchards everywhere offer fresh apples and walnuts. Saffron blooms in Pampore (late October).

This is the "Insta-worthy" Kashmir season. Visiting in October specifically — the chinars of Naseem Bagh and Royal Springs Golf Course are like nothing else.

November — December: First Snow

Temperature: 0°C to 12°C.

Best for: Anyone wanting to see fresh snow without extreme cold.

First snowfall typically arrives in Gulmarg by mid-November. Higher passes get covered. The first weeks of December are magical — fresh white powder, fewer tourists, lower prices. Photography is incredible.

By late December, Gulmarg is in full winter mode. Christmas and New Year see a small surge.
