Rajasthan has more heritage hotels than any state in India — over 200 working palaces, havelis, and forts converted into stays. Most are good. A few are unforgettable. Here are our five favourites.
1. Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur
The world's most photographed hotel, and for good reason. Built in 1746 as a royal summer palace, it sits on a 4-acre island in the middle of Lake Pichola. You arrive by boat. You leave with stories.
The hotel is essentially a floating piece of Mewar history — marble courtyards, lily ponds, mosaic peacocks. Every room has lake views. The Jiva Spa is in the original royal apartments.
Best room: Royal Suite (₹2.5 lakh/night, but you'll thank us). Most accessible: Lake View Room (₹65,000/night).
2. Rambagh Palace, Jaipur
Once the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur until 1957, when it opened as a hotel. The famous Polo Bar — where Indira Gandhi was a regular — is still operational. The gardens host peacocks. Marble corridors connect 78 rooms.
What sets Rambagh apart is the level of service — every guest gets a "butler" assigned. The Polo Lounge serves the best old-fashioned in India.
Best for: couples celebrating anniversaries, anyone who appreciates living history. Rate: from ₹45,000/night.
3. Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur
One of the largest private residences in the world — still home to the current Maharaja of Jodhpur. The hotel occupies a wing of the palace; the family lives in another. You can spot members of the royal family at breakfast occasionally.
347 rooms in the original palace, but only 64 are hotel rooms. The architecture is Art Deco meets Indo-Saracenic — completely unique. The hotel houses a vintage car collection that includes the original Rolls-Royce of Maharaja Umaid Singh.
Most famous as: the venue for Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas wedding (2018). Rate: from ₹55,000/night.
4. Samode Palace, Jaipur
Less famous than Rambagh, but architecturally more striking. Built in the 16th century as a residence for the Rawal of Samode. The Durbar Hall has hand-painted murals depicting Hindu mythology — the kind of detail you'll find in textbook photos.
What makes Samode special is its quiet location — 45 km from Jaipur, in a small village. You feel removed from time itself. The pool sits on a high terrace overlooking the village.
Best for: writers, photographers, couples seeking solitude. Rate: from ₹28,000/night.
5. Suryagarh, Jaisalmer
The newest of our recommendations (built 2010 to look 400 years old). Sandstone fortress on the edge of the Thar Desert. Designed to evoke a medieval Rajputana stronghold.
The hotel runs unique experiences — desert dinners with traditional Manganiyar musicians, camel safaris at sunrise, vintage jeep rides into the dunes. The "Sunset Sundowners" on the rampart with the desert stretching to the horizon — life-defining.
Best for: photographers, adventure-luxury seekers, repeat Rajasthan visitors. Rate: from ₹35,000/night.
Beyond the famous five — budget heritage
You don't need ₹50,000/night to experience heritage. Working havelis and small palaces are available at ₹4,000-8,000/night across Rajasthan. Our favourites:
- Nirbana Palace, Jaipur — 19th-century haveli, ₹6,500/night, central location.
- Hotel Dev Niwas, Bundi — heritage stepwell town, ₹4,500/night, authentic experience.
- Roop Niwas Kothi, Nawalgarh — heritage haveli in Shekhawati, ₹7,000/night, painted walls.
Tips for booking heritage hotels
- Book 3-4 months in advance for peak season (October-March)
- Heritage hotels often have only 20-40 rooms — they sell out fast
- Ask for upper-floor rooms in havelis — better views, more authentic
- Ground-floor rooms in palaces are sometimes higher value than "premium" upper floors
- Many properties offer free upgrades for honeymoons/anniversaries — just mention it
